Extension FAQ
Q: Are extensions damaging to my hair?
A: They can be! If the installation is done poorly, causing tension, too much stress can be placed on the hair strands and cause hair loss or breakage. In addition, improper care of the extensions on your part can also cause damage. The hair needs to be conditioned well each time it’s cleansed, dried properly and brushed daily (sometimes multiple times per day) as well as brushed correctly in order to avoid damaging your hair. Leave in conditioners are also very important.
Q: Are extensions high maintenance?
A: I think the answer is two fold. On the one hand, extensions are a luxury service that do require regular maintenance for moving the hair up as your natural hair grows. So there is definitely a time and financial investment there. However, on the daily, extensions are low maintenance. They absorb oils from your natural hair, which means you can usually cleanse your hair less and they hold a style for DAYS! They look great up, under a hat, half up, half down, with a loose braid or just left down with minimal work on your end. This saves time daily and is especially helpful on busy days!
Q: Can I travel with my extensions in?
A: This really is up to you! I have some clients who prefer to take their extensions out before travel if they know they will be swimming a lot or may not have access to a blow dryer regularly. On the flip side, some choose to leave them in because they love the way they look and they just make sure they take great care of them, braiding them if they are out on the water, wearing a hat, using extension safe sunscreen and conditioning and brushing well by keeping leave in conditioner and a brush in their travel bag.
Q: Do extensions hurt?
A: They shouldn’t! If they do, make sure to tell your stylist! Now, if you are extremely tender headed, that’s not to say you won’t experience some tenderness after your installation, but this is usually from your hair being put up in a bun and having your hair messed with while the stylist is installing and not necessarily from the extensions themselves. But pulling, redness, oozing sores or pain really should never be your experience, and if it is make sure to reach out to your stylist right away!
Q: How long do extensions last?
A: Typically most extensions last between 6-12 months depending on how well you care for them. Between month 9-12 they will definitely start to feel thinner, dryer and a little more tangled. If this is your experience, I would suggest talking to your stylist about purchasing new hair or even about rotating in a couple new wefts at each visit. As your natural hair grows you will need to come in regularly to have them moved up. This typically should be done every 6-8 weeks, give or take depending on your hair growth rate.
Q: Am I a candidate for extensions if I am not looking for that super long and thick look I see on social media?
A: Absolutely! Extensions aren’t just for adding length! They can also be utilized for fullness. Even if you have shorter hair, like a bob, but feel it looks thin an lacks volume… 1 row of extensions is a great option for you! If you have long hair but feel that it looks thin, especially on the ends, 1 row is also a great solution! Just a few wefts added into the hair make a HUGE difference in your fullness and volume!
Q: Are extensions safe for me if I have alopecia or hair loss?
A: This really depends and may be something you want to consult with your doctor on. If the hair is in an active state of falling out, especially when pulled or when tension is added, then the extra weight added from extensions would not be recommended for you right now. However, if the individual strands are strong and rooted well and the hair is not actively falling out, then extensions may be ok depending on how thick your hair is. I would recommend consulting with your stylist on this subject and if you decide that extensions are a good fit for your current state of hair health, make sure to keep open communication with your stylist and have the extensions removed right away if any hair loss is experienced after installation. If the hair is too thin to be able to add extensions in, there are beautiful wigs and hair toppers on the market now that may be a great fit for you!
